Passport Update from Carnival Cruise Lines

New travel requirements for U.S., Canadian and Bermudian citizens recently went into effect on June 1, 2009.

While the new Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requires valid passports for land and sea travel, a final ruling was issued allowing leniency for U.S. citizens traveling on "closed-loop" cruises, i.e., sailings that both originate and terminate in the same U.S. port.

Documentary requirements under WHTI for "closed loop" cruises are not limited to cruises that travel only to contiguous territories or adjacent islands. This means U.S. citizens calling on ports in Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica and Belize will also be exempt from the passport requirement.

U.S. citizens taking "closed-loop" cruises are not required to have a passport but will need proof of citizenship such as an original or certified copy of a birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization, a passport card, an enhanced driver's license (EDL) as well as a government-issued photo ID. Children are also required to bring proof of citizenship and if 16 and over, a photo ID is also required. Canadian and Bermudian citizens are required to have a passport for air, land and sea travel, including all Carnival cruises.

Although a passport is not required for U.S. citizens taking "closed loop" cruises, we strongly recommend all guests travel with a passport (valid for at least six months beyond completion of travel). Having a passport will enable guests to fly from the U.S. to a foreign port in the event they miss their scheduled embarkation or to fly back to the U.S. if they need to disembark the ship mid-cruise due to an emergency.

If a cruise begins and ends in different U.S. ports or begins and ends in a foreign port (such as our 2009 Alaska and Hawaii cruises), a valid passport or other recognized WHTI-compliant document is required. A valid passport is required if you are traveling on any of our Europe cruises.

ALL guests need proper proof of citizenship in order to travel and failure to present a valid document at check in will result in denied boarding and no refund will be issued.

Some people balk at inaugural sailings on brand new ships. I embrace them! Oh sure, there are bound to be some troubles here and there, but, the truth is they can occur on any ship, at any time. And, I, for one am looking forward to sailing on Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Magic in June, 2011.
Carnival Magic is a sister ship to Carnival Dream which is making it's debute this year. These two ships will be the largest and newest ships in the Carnival fleet to date.

Swine Flu on P & O Ship - No It Isn't The Chair Hogs

As fate would have it, the passengers on P&O's Pacific Dawn are confined or should I say moored outside of Queensland, Australia, and, will be returning to a major port rather than continuing on with the originally scheduled itinerary due to swine flu. There is almost always swine on a cruise ship but, most come in the form of chair hogs, not in the form of this horrible illness.

Chair hogs are those individuals who seek out prime lounge chairs on cruise ships, and, claim them by placing towels and personal items upon them to make them appear to be occupied but, in reality the chair hogs don't use the lounge chairs they claim. I do not tolerate chair hogs well and, I am among the first to displace them and their belongings - knowing all too well they will return hours later and there is little they can do to oust me from the chair they claimed but never used.

Too bad we can't return chair hogs to a major port and, allow the rest of the civilized passengers to continue their respective journeys chair-hog free.

Cruise Vacations: Yes, your meals are really included in the price!

I received what I consider a somewhat odd email asking if meals where included in cruise vacations. However, going back to my travel agent years, this isn't the first time I've been asked this question and, in today's cruising world, it's actually an excellent topic to discuss.

Most people know it's a forgone conclusion that there is a lot of food on cruise ships, and, no one will ever go hungry. Occasionally, like today, someone might not understand how food on a cruise ship works so this is an attempt to try to explain it to those who fall into this category.

The Main Dining Room - No additional charge
The main dining room is where you can eat breakfast, lunch and, dinner every day of your cruise. This is included in the price of your cruise, and, there is no extra charge. However, be aware if you order drinks then you on-board account will be charged for the drinks you order. There are some exceptions to the rule such as water, coffee, and tea.

Afternoon Tea - No additional charge
Many cruise ships offer afternoon tea. Check with your daily program to see if one is scheduled (usually between 3:30 pm and 5 pm on most ships.) Cunard takes afternoon tea to new heights in true British style while lines such as Carnival offer a very civilized-but-shorts-are-ok-to wear atmosphere. It offers the perfect pick me up, especially for those with late sitting for dinner!

The Buffet - No additional charge
The buffet on most cruise ships is open for breakfast and lunch and are included in your cruise fare. Dinner time varies from ship to ship. For example, on Cunard's Queen Mary 2, the King's Court is transformed into four alternative dining venues - three of which are included in your cruise fare. And, on other lines such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean (just for example) a dinner buffet is available every night of your cruise. A few lines such as Princess offer a 24 hour buffet.

Some people prefer the buffet over the dining room, especially if they do not feel like conforming to the dress code for the dining for the evening. And, it also makes for a great alternative to the dining room on days you might have early shore tours.

The Midnight Buffet - No additional charge
This is a favorite among many cruisers and a long time standing tradition. The midnight buffet is a chance for the ship's chefs to show off their skills, and, passengers often attend just to take photos of the amazing creations.

Hamburger Grill - No additional charge
Even Cunard has a hamburger grill on board, and, there is no additional charge. Just like every dining venue listed above, it is included in your cruise fare. Hamburger grills usually serve burgers, hot dogs, and, of course the usual accompaniments like french fries.

Alternative Restaurants - Additional charge, fees vary
This seems to be the one that trips everyone up - the often misunderstood Alternative Restaurant. Yes, there is an additional fee. Yes, it is going to be in the $25 - $35 per person range. Yes, it's true most discourage bringing young children. However, it is oh-so-worth-it!

As good as the food and service in the main dining room is on most cruise ships, your alternative restaurant on-board will put it to shame!

The dining experience in an alternative restaurant should not be rushed, it recommended that you allow two to three hours for the full experience, and, bring a healthy appetite - you won't be walking away hungry.

Hopefully this clears up a bit of the mystery on dining aboard. So relax and enjoy!

Carnival Fantasy Cruise Passenger Overboard

Here we go again... It seems to be a monthly ritual nowadays, I am, of course, talking about the latest person to go overboard on a cruise ship. Being a cruise veteran, I know there are only a few possibilities that could have led to this young man going overboard: drunkenness (which would beg the question how did he get alcohol in the first place since he is only 18); rowdiness (meaning he and his fellow classmates were rough-housing and it got out of hand); or plain stupidity by doing something as brainless as sitting on the railing.

As I was researching what happened with the young man from Louisiana, I happen to stumble upon a site called Cruise SOS. I am not endorsing this card or company since I know nothing about them but, what they do offer is a free card with some common sense instructions of how to handle emergencies at sea (including what to do if someone goes overboard.) They also offer a very interesting and informative section called "What To Do" on their website: http://www.cruisesos.com/whattodo.asp

Hopes and prayers go out to the young man and his family that is safely rescued.

Great Cruises "Why Not the Mediterranean?" More Like "Why An Hour Long Ad?"

Did anyone happen to catch Great Cruises on the Travel Channel last night (Sunday, May 24, 2009)? This particular episode is one that I did not see before last night's airing. It was focused on the Mediterranean aboard Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas.

I immensely enjoy the Travel Channel, and, especially when they focus on cruising. The episode of Great Cruises "Why Not The Mediterranean" left me wondering what they were thinking when they produced the show. Instead of being informative, it was obliviously staged and came across (at least to me) as an hour long advertisement for Royal Caribbean. And, let me just state now that I happen to enjoy Royal Caribbean, however, after viewing the show last night it has me wondering who exactly they are trying to attract to their market.

The show focused on three girlfriends from Atlanta, Georgia, and, a family from North Carolina. If they were true cruise passengers, I could be a little more forgiving in my critique but, it was so oblivious that the children from the North Carolina family were reading cue cards, the entire episode lost all credibility with me. Additionally, when giving highlights in the Ports of Call, why in the world did they show the North Carolina family staying on-board? They (supposedly) traveled from the USA to Europe for this cruise, and, decided to stay on-board during a day in port??? Not exactly believable!!

To further discredit the way the episode presented cruising, the three girlfriends were given private tours (including one with someone from the ship!) Anyone who has taken a ship sponsored tour, knows you almost never have a member of the ships crew along with you and, unless you pay mega bucks, you are grouped together and herded like cattle on the sightseeing excursions.

In this writer's opinion the entire episode was nothing more than an hour long advertisement for Royal Caribbean, and, a bad one at that... It has me wondering if I shouldn't make a quantum leap to a more upscale cruise line or make a more lateral move to a cruise line such as Princess.

So this is a plea to the Travel Channel please, please leave the cruise episodes to Samantha Brown who presents the ships and ports in an unbiased way. And, please don't produce any more infomercials for Royal Caribbean!!

Cruising: Formal Nights or Are They?

I have a pet-peeve. Ok, I have many pet-peeves, but, one in particular that comes to mind when discussing cruises is people who believe dress codes do not apply to them. Visit any of the cruise message boards, and, you'll often find heated debates over this topic. On most cruise lines (with exceptions such as NCL - Norwegian Cruise Lines), you are "requested" to be in formal attire for dinner (usually two nights out of seven on a week long cruise.)

I've seen people who dress beautifully and get it right and, then I get angry when I see someone in something that doesn't even come close to formal. Since when does a T-shirt that says "I'm with Stupid" qualify as formal in anyone's mind? To these people I say, if you don't want to dress, why are you on a cruise ship that does have dress codes? And, why do you think the rules apply to everyone but, you?

Yes, it DOES bother me. If I, and, my fellow passengers can find the time and make the effort to groom, and, make ourselves presentable, then why in the world do you think you can do what you want? We all notice you or maybe that's your plan.

And, no just because someone isn't dressed as much I might be that evening isn't going to spoil my night or cruise but, it does anger me that people (and this applies to nearly every aspect of life) don't believe the rules apply to them. Do you run a red light because you don't feel like stopping? Or cut in front of the woman with two children at the fast food restaurant because she wasn't paying attention that she needed to move up? With few exceptions, most of you probably answered "no" to those questions. So why do you believe dress codes on cruise ships don't apply to you?

Some argue that it's too expensive. Well, you found the money to book a cruise in first place, is it asking all that much that you at least TRY to meet the formal night request? No one is asking you to drop $1000 on a dress you might not ever wear again! Bargins can be found on the Internet on sites such as E-bay, and, many (in fact most times) it's rather easy to locate brand new, still has tags on it clothing that people simply want to sell for whatever reason. It's a great place to get a $200 dress for $15 or $25 dollars. So NO the too expensive arguement doesn't fly with me at all.

This brings up the question of why there are formal nights at all? Isn't a cruise suppose to be a relaxing, care-free experience? Well, there isn't a heck a lot of information about formal nights (outside of the arguments pro and con) on the topic. The fact is it dates back to the heyday when cruising was for the rich and famous and a serious means of transportation. It was also a time when your social status mattered, and, your manner of dress reflected your social class. As cruising became a way of relaxing and less about being a form of transportation the tradition of dressing for dinner stayed, and, through the course of history has dwindled down to just two nights on a typical seven day cruise.

I enjoy dressing. It makes me feel better knowing I'm looking my best. And, I find it very difficult to comprehend why people put up such a fuss about putting on a gown or cocktail dress or a suit or tuxedo. If you're looking to sport that t-shirt with your grand kids on it, why can't you wear it in port or around the ship during the day? Why do you think the dress codes apply to everyone but, you?

Oh I know this is an argument I will never win. The fact of the matter is class and manners are quickly losing their meaning in today's society, and, yes, dressing is part of class and manners. It's how you present yourself to the world. So, if you want to wear your Minnie Mouse earrings and polyester slacks and top and call it formal that is your choice, just don't do it on a cruise ship or sail on a line that allows a relaxed dress code.

And yes I am addressing you! You know who you are...

For many, it was a disappointment to learn that Carnival Cruise Lines pulled ships from Europe for the 2010 season. However, speculation and rumors are all pointing to the very strong possibility that Carnival will indeed return to Europe in June, 2011 when the newest ship in the Carnival fleet, Carnival Magic, makes it's debut.

Carnival Magic is a sister ship to Carnival Dream which sets sail in September, 2009. The Dream class ships are the largest and most innovative "Fun Ships" in Carnival's fleet. These markets are where the romance of the holidays come to life alive — smells of gingerbread and roasting sausages waft through the brisk air, handmade ornaments adorn trees, master glassblowers and other artisans ply their crafts in wooden stalls, and, shoppers all seeking that perfect item to make their Christmas a special one.

Welcome to Nuremberg. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your ship. * After boarding, use your free time to explore on your own—or join our “welcome walk” to stretch your legs and start getting oriented. (D)

Day 2 Nuremberg (Germany)

Your tour begins with a journey to see former Nazi rally grounds and the Palace of Justice, site of the historic Nuremberg Trials. From the walled section of downtown, walk up to the Imperial Castle grounds for amazing city views. Or, take our optional World War II history tour visiting the Documentation Center Museum. Then, descend into the Old Town, passing the Albrecht Dürer House and the Main Market Square. Stay in the city to visit Nuremberg’s world-famous Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) or enjoy free time. Back aboard, cruise through the engineering marvel of the Main-Danube Canal and its many locks. Dinner is served aboard; cruise through the night. (B, L, D)

Day 3 Regensburg

Arrive midmorning in medieval Regensburg whose history dates back more than 2,000 years to its founding by Marcus Aurelius. Take a walking tour through this well-preserved city and explore its historic splendor. See the Old Town, St. Peter’s Cathedral and the 12th-century Old Stone Bridge. Eat lunch aboard or take free time to visit Germany’s oldest restaurant, the 800-year-old Alte Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen). You have time at leisure to visit the Christmas market or explore the city further—your Program Director can help you plan your free time. Dinner aboard, accompanied by a delightful performance of Bavarian folkloric music, is followed by an evening departure. (B, L, D)

Day4 Passau

Arrive during breakfast in beautiful Passau, set at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers. Take a walking tour along narrow cobblestone streets and through graceful arcades to visit St. Stephan’s Cathedral. Enjoy afternoon free time to explore the Christmas market or stores. Dine aboard as you cruise the scenic Danube enjoying its quiet winter landscape and quaint riverside towns.(B, L, D)

Day 5 Linz

Wake up in Linz. After breakfast, take a walking tour past the city’s baroque facades to the Hauptplatz. Continue through the medieval town and old market. From here, tour inside the cathedral and stroll other squares and markets before returning to your ship for lunch. Your afternoon is free to explore Linz’s stores or Christmas market. Or instead of visiting Linz, you can choose to take an optional full-day tour to Salzburg, a jewel-like town famous as the setting for the film The Sound of Music. Explore the Old Town area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit the birthplace and home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Dine aboard and cruise through the night. (B, L, D)

Day 6 Melk

Arrive in Melk after breakfast and enjoy spectacular views as you ride to the top of the hill, where the abbey overlooks the river. Tour this 900-year-old Benedictine abbey and see its baroque splendor inside and out. The lavish interior is decorated with elaborate frescoes, and a highlight is the spectacular library with its comprehensive collection of medieval manuscripts. Have lunch aboard and enjoy an apple strudel workshop. Depart midafternoon and cruise through the night. (B, L, D)

Day 7 Vienna

After breakfast, embark on a city tour to visit this “City of Waltzes,” where Mozart and Strauss composed many of their finest works. Ride along the Ringstrasse to see the Opera House and beautiful Hofburg Palace. Lunch is served on the ship, then take the afternoon to shop along the Kärtnerstrasse, visit the city’s Christmas market or people-watch at a quaint café.
